Audrey Fletcher grew up in a cramped apartment in the Bronx, where the kitchen was a small, sunlit space that smelled of simmering tomato sauce and the sharp tang of citrus. Her mother, a nurse who worked nights, would bring home leftovers that she transformed into quick, comforting meals for her family. From that early exposure, Audrey learned that a meal could be both a refuge and a statement of love.
It was a rainy afternoon in 2018 when Audrey, then a graduate student in culinary science, walked into her grandmother’s attic and found an old, battered cookbook titled ‘The Family Table.’ The cover was stained with flour, and the pages were filled with handwritten notes in a looping script that read, ‘When in doubt, add a pinch of salt and a lot of heart.’ That moment crystallized her belief that comfort food is an invitation to return to the familiar, no matter how far one has traveled.
Today, Audrey runs easyflavorrecipes, a site that hosts over 200 original recipes focused on comfort and family traditions. She believes that the best dishes are those that can be made with everyday ingredients and that bring people together. What drives her now is the joy of sharing those stories through food and seeing strangers become family over a shared table.
I insist that the most powerful recipes are those that let the ingredients speak for themselves, because food should be honest, not embellished.
